WOW Outreach and Our Savior Lutheran work together in partnership to create opportunities for neighbors living in the northern boundaries of Flint through the Mt. Carmel – Kennedy Center.  In addition, over the past year, WOW and Our Savior have developed additional screening tools, provided educational opportunities, training courses and classes to youth, families, local residents, volunteers and staff who utilize and play a role in the programs and services offered at the Kennedy Center.

Through funding assistance provided by the Community Foundation of Greater Flint, the Mt. Carmel Kennedy Center has grown stronger as a viable organization, it is in a better position to continue serving youth and family residing throughout the surrounding neighborhood, has established a level of trust with local residents, and is finally at a point where youth, residents and community partners are giving back and beginning to invest in the Center’s future.

From July – December 2014 the Kennedy Center was open on the 1st and 3rd Monday of the month (16 days) with other activities offered at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Church Without Walls, and Community Action Group.  There has been 191 youth in attendance at the Mt. Carmel Kennedy Center and 23 adult mentors.  On average, 25 to 30 youth attend bi-weekly, and 12 adult mentors.  This is a 53% increase from prior efforts of Mt. Carmel church staff and members.  Last year, a host of educational, recreational activities, mentorship opportunities, and community involvement projects were offered and attended by youth, families, and local residents.  Youth were empowered by mentors who provided arts and crafts, homework assistance, singing, dancing lessons, “real-talk” sessions, self-esteem, conflict resolution, safety classes, employment and entrepreneurship opportunities through local employers.
